The Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) is the largest U.S. military community outside the United States. It spans several towns and municipalities in the West Palatinate region, including Kaiserslautern, Ramstein, Landstuhl and Sembach. More than 50,000 American service members, civilian employees and their families live and work in this area. Daily life is shaped by an international atmosphere with English-speaking services, international restaurants, schools and doctors. At the same time, the KMC offers a high quality of life with access to nature, strong transport connections and plenty of recreational options. Our fully furnished off-base lodging are right in the middle of it all – perfect for anyone living or working in the KMC area.
The KMC includes a wide range of U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force installations. Among them are Ramstein Air Base, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC), Kleber Kaserne, Daenner Kaserne, Pulaski Barracks, Vogelweh, Sembach Kaserne and Kapaun Air Station. The Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) began to take shape after World War II, when the U.S. Army started to permanently station troops in Germany. In the 1950s, the construction of Ramstein Air Base and later the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center laid the foundation for what would become the largest American military community outside the United States.
Over the decades, the KMC grew not only in military importance but also in daily life: schools, housing areas, shopping centers and recreational facilities were built to support American families living abroad. Today, more than 50,000 people live and work in the region. The KMC has become a key part of life in the West Palatinate, closely connected to German towns and deeply rooted in the region.
The KMC sits in one of the most scenic areas of Germany, surrounded by rolling hills, forests and historic landmarks. The Palatinate Forest borders the region and offers endless opportunities for hiking, biking and peaceful walks in nature. Favorite spots include Seewoog Lake in Miesenbach, Nanstein Castle in Landstuhl and the Japanese Garden in Kaiserslautern. Smaller towns nearby offer local charm, farmers’ markets and plenty to explore. Thanks to its central location, day trips to Heidelberg, Trier or even across the border into Alsace are easy to plan.
