1. The KMC is the largest U.S. military community outside the United States

More than 50,000 Americans live and work in the region – including service members, civilian employees and their families. Spanning multiple bases and towns, the KMC functions like a small American city in the heart of Germany, offering a unique blend of military structure and international life. 

2. The KMC is ideally located in the Heart of Europe 

The KMC is strategically located in southwestern Germany – ideal for logistics operations, mission planning and NATO coordination. Its position allows for quick access to key regions across Europe, making it a vital hub for both U.S. and allied forces. 

3. Ramstein Air Base is Europe’s Gateway for air operations 

Ramstein Air Base (RAB) is the largest U.S. military installation outside the U.S. and serves as U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) and NATO’s Allied Air Command (AIRCOM).

4. LRMC is the largest U.S. Military Hospital overseas

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) is the largest U.S. military hospital outside the United States – serving as a medical center for all of Europe, with over 72 years of experience since its opening in 1953. It provides advanced medical care to U.S. service members, civilians and coalition partners, often serving as the first stop for wounded personnel evacuated from combat zones. 

5. The KMC includes approximately 30 military sites and facilities 

The KMC includes Ramstein, Landstuhl, Vogelweh, Sembach, Kleber, Pulaski, Kapaun and many more – together, they form a fully integrated operational community. 

6. The KMC is a combined Community of the U.S. Army and Air Force 

In the KMC, the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force work closely together – making it one of the most integrated military communities in the world.  

  • Air Force facilities: Ramstein Air Base (RAB), Einsiedlerhof, Pirmasens Air Station, Vogelweh Air Base, Kapaun Air Station  
  • Army facilities: Sembach Kaserne, Kleber Kaserne, Panzer Kaserne, Daenner Kaserne, Landstuhl, Kirchberg, Miesau Army Depot, Kaiserslautern Industrial Center (KIC), Rhine Ordnance Barracks (ROB), Pulaski Barracks 

7. The KMCC offers everything you need under one roof 

The Kaiserslautern Military Community Center (KMCC) is the heart of convenience in the KMC. Right across from the Air Mobility Command Passenger Terminal, the KMCC combines lodging, shopping, dining and entertainment in one massive, American-style complex.  

With over 844.000 square feet of space, the KMCC features a 350-room hotel, a modern food court, new car sales and one of the few movie theaters available on base. You’ll also find a Power Zone, Toyland, specialty stores and yes – there’s even a two-story climbing wall in the Outdoor Recreation area.

8. The KMC offers an American school system (DoDEA) 

The KMC offers a comprehensive American school system through DoDEA (Department of Defense Education Activity) for military children in Kaiserslautern, Ramstein, Vogelweh and Landstuhl. These DoDEA schools provide a consistent, high-quality education that supports the unique needs of military families living overseas. 

9. The KMC plays a major economic role in the region

The KMC creates thousands of jobs and brings over 1 billion euros in annual purchasing power to the West Palatinate – from housing to retail.
